Fr Martin joined the Board of COPE Galway in 2011. Because COPE Galway was originally set up by the Diocese, our constitution offers a permanent seat to the Diocese . Fr Martin is the Diocesan Secretary. In this role, he plays a key part in maintaining a profile, and support of our work across the many parishes in Galway city and County.
Fr. Martin Whelan is from Ardrahan, Co. Galway. After finishing school in Gort he entered St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth where he trained for the Catholic Priesthood. Fr. Whelan also studied philosophy at the University of Leuven, Belgium. In 2009 he was ordained a priest and took up pastoral duties at Galway Cathedral. In 2010, he was appointed Galway Diocesan Secretary.
Fr. Whelan’s role as a director of COPE Galway represents the Catholic Church’s commitment to helping the most vulnerable in Irish society.
