June 15th 2018
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2018 is held on June 15th and is an annual international UN observance day. With a growing global population of elderly people, and as longevity increases, abuse of the elderly is an increasing and serious problem that affects health and human rights and can cause death. We at COPE Galway agree that it is therefore vital to raise awareness of elder abuse and thus prevent it whenever and wherever possible.
The number of elder abuse cases has been rising. In Ireland in 2016 there were 3,029 safeguarding concerns for those over 65 years reported to the Safeguarding and Protection Teams (HSE), with 40% of these related to people over 80 years who in 4 out of 5 cases are residing in the community. Suspected cases of elder abuse can be reported to the HSE National Safeguarding Office at 061 461 358 or by calling the HSE information line on 1850 24 1850.
