Local homelessness charity COPE Galway has identified a number of key issues it considers the next Government needs to address for those who are without a home in Galway. The local organisation is asking the Galway public to highlight some priority issues to candidates seeking their vote in the General Election on February 26th 2016, and to ask the candidates to commit to including these issues in any programme for government they or their party enter into.
Jacquie Horan, CEO of COPE Galway would like to show the community how their support really does make a difference in peoples lives, and to thank everyone who makes this possible in so many different ways.

COPE Galway says access to housing is the single biggest issue experienced by clients of its services. They are calling on landlords who wish to address the housing crisis, to join with them and be part of the solution.

Anne has rung the refuge five times in the last ten days – she desperately wants to get away from her partner who is being threatening and verbally abusive to both her and their two children aged 4 and 6. She says she cannot go to family or friends because he will find her there. She doesn’t want to call the guards because, she says, ‘his family will take it out on me’. Anne needs refuge but there are no spaces available for her in Galway.

COPE Galway has welcomed the measures relating to the fixing of rents for two years and the protections against excessive rent increases in the reforms to the private rental sector that were announced yesterday by Minister Alan Kelly (10th November).

COPE Galway has expressed disappointment at what it sees as the failure of Budget 2016 to adequately address homelessness and tackle the current shortage of housing in Galway.
