5th April 2017
COPE Galway Community Catering Meals on Wheels welcomed Mayor of Galway City Cllr. Noel Larkin to their facility at unit 5 Ballybane Industrial Estate on Tuesday 4th April. The Mayor was eager to learn about the range of meals produced by the Meals on Wheels team and the development of community lunch clubs for older people across Galway, which are catered by the team. He also discussed ways of expanding their food donations programmes to people in the local community who are at risk of food poverty.
Community Catering Meals on Wheels service produced & delivered almost 50,000 meals in 2016 for older people across Galway city and parts of the county including Oranmore, Corundulla and Claregalway. The service is supported by 135 volunteers. Every week between 80-100 older people sit down to a meal at one of 7 lunch clubs in their community.
COPE Galway’s tagline, Lets help together, is very much in evidence at the Meals on Wheels service as the staff, volunteers and local community groups are involved in working together to ensure that older people are looked after and supported to stay living at home independently.
